News Update – November 2009

It has been a hectic visit to Corfu this autumn with many sick cats and many problems. We have neutered a few more street cats and also about 12 cats belonging to Greek people, which is excellent progress and really good to be able to help more and more people on the island to take responsibility for the animals and to neuter.

We are very pleased to be able to help our Greek friends and wish to thank all of you that have sponsored some of the Greek peoples cats. We still have lots more looking for sponsors and as long as you continue to support us we can continue to help the Greek people, so why not 'sponsor a cat for Xmas'.

Kitten Rescue
Now that the season has ended there are many kittens being found alongside the roads and many running around desperately looking for food. We appeal to anyone living on the island to stop and just make sure these kittens and in an area where they can find food.

We are always asking people to take in cats and kittens but we receive very little help or offers, so if anyone can help us by taking in a cat or kitten please contact us.

If anyone living in Corfu can take on a kitten as an outdoor cat and ensure that they get food and have shelter and some protection from the bad weather in the wintertime we will sterilise any cat that is taken on and pay for any medication.

Help Needed
The AAWF also needs help and more volunteers, without further help our work will be reduced and we will not be able to continue to help as many people as we have in the past. Please contact us if you would like to help us, mainly on the Island working directly with the animals and fosterers are also needed.

Winter Feeding Time
We are back to winter again now and there are many cats in some areas that have little access to food. We are trying to feed the cats in those areas and have a feeder in one resort. We have support from John and Yvonne in St Spiridon too so if anyone can donate to our winter feeding fund we would be very grateful and so would many of the Corfu cats. So please spare a thought for them when you are Xmas shopping and send them a gift of food.

AAWF Google Homepage
Thank you to all the new people that have set up our googlepage and asked friends and family to do the same. Please continue to use the Google Homepage which is working well now with alot of increased use. Please use it for all your searches because every search earns us money. Ebay, M&S, Tesco the Lottery and many of britains favourite shops can be accessed from the google page and when purchases are made from any of the shops we earn money from it - so please remember to shop through the page as well as search.

Anyone who does not have our Google Page here is the link, you just make it your home page and you will earn money for the animals with no cost to yourselves.  http://google.agni-animal-welfare-fund.com

News Update – September 2009

After a break in the UK which was very pleasant and the weather not as bad as was made out to be, we have returned to Corfu for a short time. Since arriving last week it has been hectic, already with two sick cats to try and help and many visits to the vets. Unfortunately we lost one but the other one is recovering quite well.

The main objective of this visit is to neuter a few more cats with your very kind donations and to set up the winter feeding.

Kitten Rescue
With the help of many colleagues on the Island whilst we have been away, some stray kittens were found and rehomed  and the couple featured in our last update both received medical treatment, recovered from their injuries and found  permanent homes thanks to the help and generosity of our supporters. If anyone reading this can offer a home or some refuge for any kittens we find at the end of the season please contact us.

It is fast approaching the end of the season and many stray animals will be left to fend for themselves when the resorts close. We appeal to anyone on the island that can help us with these animals. We would welcome donations of food for them or donations through the website here to purchase food for the winter.

If anyone living in Corfu can take on a kitten as an outdoor cat and ensure that they get food and have shelter and some protection from the bad weather in the wintertime we will sterilise any cat that is taken on and pay for any medication.

We try only to ask people to take special cases or very young kittens that we find from time to time that need that extra help, we do try not to ask the same people to take too many, if anyone could take just one cat it would help us enormously as some of our helpers already have so many. Please contact us if you can help by email at
info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com

The Cat of Portovecchio
We have a new book for sale in the AAWF shop with donations going to the animals for each purchase. It is 'The Cat of Portovecchio, Corfu Tales - book by Maria Strani-Potts'
a very appropriate book for us and takes place on Corfu. It can be ordered from the our shop page and will make an excellent xmas present so place your orders now in time for Xmas. Visit the AAWF shop page for details.

News Update – July 2009

Since the last news update, as expected the weather has turned from Spring in Corfu to summer and getting very hot with predominantly long hot summer days. The charity has neutered around 50 cats since our return in February and with the tourist season in full swing we are now taking a break. It is very difficult to neuter during the season, it is very hot, the cats have all disappeared into the holiday resorts and we do not want to disturb the holidaymakers trying to catch cats!!

We have treated a few sick cats in the last few weeks thanks to your continued support, but hopefully they will be a few less cats around some of the tourist areas this year reducing the numbers and the risks of sick cats. We managed to keep the food coming for the kalami strays during the winter and those that survived the poisoning on the beach, which took place at the beginning of this year just before we returned, are now back in their favourite tourist spots. We would still remind people that are visiting those resorts not to take the cats inside apartments or villas, feed them outside in an area that we can continue to access during the winter. The cats do move around and will move to the feeding stations but please encourage them to do that whilst you are visiting.

John and Yvonne continued to feed the strays near the little bridge in St.Spiridon and helped them to survive the winter. The kittens have since been neutered and some are still around in the same area, but with the tourists arriving they are moving around. There is a big problem in this area with poisoning so please do not encourage the cats to go to the tavernas, feed them well away from any tavernas or contact John for advice. Anyone living or working in that area please support John and Yvonne by donating cat food to them for the winter feeding. We will try, with your help and donations to continue with some more neutering in this area.

Kitten Rescue
Many little kittens are turning up or being found on their own, some in the middle of the road!!  thank you to everyone that has taken in kittens and are helping them. We will try and neuter them when they are old enough for you, especially if anyone is caring for many cats and kittens. We have a few new ones looking for sponsors, so if anyone wants to do something to help who are in the UK and cannot help us in Corfu, you can always sponsor a cat or kitten for its neutering.

We have very recently been reading on the message boards about the little black cat with a really bad whole in its neck. A lady working at the Blue Bay Escape brought this to our attention and John who lives in the area went to look for the cat until he eventually found him and took him to the vets. The little boy had a very nasty bite (we think a snake bite) that had become infected he was treated at the vets and has some stitches and medication and is making a very good recovery. John has appealed for someone to take the little boy instead of returning him to the streets and we have eventually found him a home where his medication will continue and he will be well cared for. We thank Marion a very good friend of ours and even more so of the cats, for taking on Frankie (as he is now called).

Frankie - the pictures shows him after his medication
began, his wound was far worse than shown but we do
not want to upset anyone with the original pictures.
Frankie is now looking for a Sponsor

Since Frankie was found, yet another little kitten has been found in the middle of the road with a very similar nasty bite on its neck causing an abscess. He too has been treated at the vets and is making a good recovery, thanks to Janet and Jeremy in Kendroma.

Luna - found in the road very disorientated
with a very nasty wound - she now has a sponsor!!

The AAWF is paying for the treatments and medication for both of these cats and for others that are found with similar medical problems. We do try to give priority to these cases and keep some funds for these emergencies. These two are examples of what your money is being used for besides neutering and winter food. If you want to help the animals you see in Corfu then do continue to support us and we will do our best to treat and help them. If anyone could raise funds for us through summer fairs, car boots, sponsored walks etc. we would be very grateful, rather than asking people to continually donate to us.

Kitten Appeal
We have been notified of other kittens being treated for eye problems that have some temporary care at present but due to people returning to the UK do not have permanent homes.

AAWF Google Homepage
We recently had a problem with our google homepage, where some of you may have lost it. This was due to a move to another server and the slight change in the URL for the homepage.

The google page is now bringing us a monthly income, which costs nothing to the supporters but means a lot to us. Please continue to use the page and if you have lost it, please check you have the correct URL which is http://google.agni-animal-welfare-fund.com

News Update – April 2009

Google Page
It is time for a news update as last month we concentrated solely on the google homepage. Thanks to everyone using it, the usage has increased in the last month and we are now receiving a monthly income from it - thanks to everyone of you out there helping us, please continue to shop, search and keep us as your homepage to keep our income flowing in. I have left the details below for any new comers to the site that would like to read about how they can help us at no cost to themselves.

The Cats
We have managed to keep most of the strays fed this winter in several areas including Kalami, where there was a big cat problem by the end of the season. We are still visiting Kalami with food and some of our little friends are still around. However I have to report this month the awful event we came across during the winter months when 6 of our cats there were found poisoned on the beach. This is something that takes place on Corfu far too often and is so unnecessary. We are working hard to reduce the population in the village, and to stop the cats from bothering people at the tavernas. With  the neutering we have now done in Kalami the population will be much reduced and it was not necessary to do this. I and many others have a very good idea who did it and I shall not remain quiet about it although we do not have any proof and so are unable to take any legal action.

Kalami is a hive of activity now with everyone working hard to get the apartments, villas and restaurants ready for your visits. The A&A apartments have their first visitors arriving on the 1st May and I hope you find some of the cats you helped last year still around there. Some are there but some will not be I am sorry to say. We picked up one little guy two weeks ago, we knew from last year, choked up with cat flu and could not eat, but after being kept inside and on medication for nearly two weeks now, he is a new cat and almost ready to return to the apartments where I hope you will all help to care for him when you come. He is so friendly you will notice him and he loves a cuddle!!!

The little boy from Kalami feeling much better
(message for Wendy - I'm waiting for you - )

Since returning to Corfu in February we have continued with the neutering and have neutered many more cats and found some really nice people to sponsor some of them, there are still some lovely little guys pictured above so if you would like to help us and sponsor one of our cats, please contact us at the email address below.

Spring may have arrived at last!!!
When we returned in February, the weather was just unbelievable, it was so cold, much colder than in the UK for most of the time and we were beginning to think that summer would never come!!!!  Then a few days ago the Spring arrived!!!! It is now lovely and warm, in the evenings too, and if the sun comes out it is quite hot. We have waited along time for this but finally Corfu looks beautiful again, with all the beautiful spring flowers out and the sun shining on the turquoise sea and of course it is much better for our outdoor animals trying to get themselves through the long cold winter.

Corfu's beautiful spring flowers are starting to cover the Island

News Update – January 2009
Welcome to our first news update of the year and a Happy New Year to all. 2009 is not forecast to be a good year, as things are in the world today, but lets hope that's wrong and it does not turn out to be as bad as the so called 'experts' are proposing. There has to be some good in 2009 so we must do our best to find it!

PLEASE NOTE - CHANGE OF EMAIL ADDRESS
Firstly could I ask all of you that contact us by email in future to use the address:-
info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com perhaps you could add it to your address books. I have had to change the email address of the charity so please do not use any other address only this one from now on, many thanks.

Cat Feeding
This time of year, especially with ourselves and so many others returning to the UK for the Christmas celebrations our main concern is feeding the cats. Mostly cats in the resort areas that are now almost deserted and closed up for the winter. Before returning to the UK for the Xmas season we made arrangements with friends to continue feeding the stray cats in the closed tourist resorts.

Kalami had an exceptional amount of cats and kittens born during the summer and so this was our priority for neutering this Autumn. When we return very shortly, we shall continue with more neutering in this area and hopefully there will be no increase in cats to feed in Kalami next winter!!  Of course new cats will stray into the area from outside of the village, especially when they find out whats on the menu down there, but hopefully,  with your help, we can spot the newcomers and keep the numbers down if your support continues. We have had tremendous support in Kalami this summer from visitors, local people and friends working in the village and we hope you will continue with your support again this season. Pictures of some of the Kalami cats can still be found on the site in the weblog archive. All the cats we featured in our last update are still around and have had an excellent Christmas thanks to our friends Janet and Jeremy who have been visiting the Kalami cats regularly over the Xmas period with extra treats and a Xmas Dinner!!!! .... in addition to filling up the feeders. Take a look at this....

Christmas Dinner in Kalami - feline style!!!!
the turn out was very slow, as they all had a lay in Christmas Day!

Some of us will not sit at the table and eat with the others

Wow - this dinner tastes good - it must be Christmas

Not only did Janet and Jeremy provide these lucky guys and others that turned up late, with a lovely Christmas dinner, they also saved the life of a poor young lady that got herself locked into the A&A apartments. Since their last visit to Kalami, someone must have been to the office of the apartments and our feline friend finding the door open must have  crept in. Unfortunately she was not seen, and got locked inside. When dinner was laid out on Xmas morning a lot of meowing and shouting was heard from the room above the supermarket, where on investigation Janet and Jeremy discovered the cat desperately trying to get out.

So Xmas morning on taking a quick peep at my emails I received a desperate message asking if I knew of anyone who had any keys to the A&A Apartments!  I did, but I didn't know how to contact them and on Xmas day!

However I did have the telephone number of our friend Alex who lives in our village of Kendroma. Janet telephoned Alex immediately and explained the problem, and that Xmas day evening Alex arranged to go to the apartments with someone who had some keys to let the cat out. It was a great relief to receive this photo the following day to say the cat was out and fit and well and no worse off for her experience. She was late getting her Xmas dinner though, but there was plenty of food waiting for her when she got out. Thanks to Alex and everyone concerned for rescuing our feline friend. I expect many of you will recognise her as being the Mum of the ginger kittens that were usually found around the restaurant area of the Cocktail and Dreams bar.

The beige coloured Mum enjoying her freedom!

St. Spiridon
The lucky cats living in St. Spiridon have also been receiving regular meals thanks to John and Yvonne who visit the cats and take food every day. Thanks to their kindess they also had a Xmas day dinner as they get food everyday. It is great to see the little kittens, that they found just after the summer season had finished, looking so healthy and growing stronger each day. We will be visiting St. Spiridon on our return in order to try and get some of the cats there neutered before the breeding season starts again. If anyone would like to sponsor any of the cats there for neutering or can donate towards their food we would love to hear from you. If anyone living nearby could save any scraps or food or donate some food to John and Yvonne they would be very grateful.

St.Spiridon kittens enjoying their Xmas dinner

Sidari
Thanks to Jess up in Sidari our little Sidari girl who is now 'Ginny' had a Xmas dinner too, along with all the other strays that Jess feeds. Jess is caring for Ginny now as she has had a little more trouble with her eye and flu. She is on medication and with regular food and warmth, she is doing well. Quaver the little kitten that Jess found has now found a permanent home. We thank the people that have taken him in and hope he has a good life. As soon as one moves out though another one moves in!!!!   Jess now has another kitten that has found his way to her home. He is called Tonic and gets along fine with Ginny. So Jess now has Ginny and Tonic!  who will be up for sponsorship very shortly.

Ginny and Tonic
life's improved for these two lucky guys

Quaver
good luck to him in his new home

Kassiopi
Debbie and Dominque continue to help the cats in Kassiopi. Many thanks to both of them for the hard work they do and also the funds they raise for the animals in the Kassiopi area. They both work very hard to help the strays and we appreciate all the help and support that the visitors have given them too. Please continue to support them at their shop 'Sweet Beauty' if you are visiting this year.

Many of the cats in Kassiopi area have been neutered and the numbers have reduced. However the numbers were greatly reduced by poisoning earlier this summer, which appears to be common practice in this village. Please try and protect the cats from people who do this, it is not necessary, neutering keeps the numbers down and is working in many areas.

Thanks to everyone that are feeding strays around the deserted resorts, without you all these animals would have a terrible struggle to survive the winter.  As soon as the apartments close the cats and kittens appear from everywhere desperately hungry and looking for food, bewildered and wondering where everyone has gone. It is a very sad sight. If  local people living in these resorts can just put some food in a sheltered common area for them, it will help to relieve some of the suffering.

A Message from 'Savvy' - a very large girl from Barbati  who found herself a new home in the UK.

"Hi guys I have settled in very well here in England.  I still don't like that other cat thing, but I have lots of cuddles from Sue and Mark and I have the run of the house and now have a special furry round bed that I don't like getting out of in the morning. It is getting cold here but when I go outside I leap about on the grass which makes sue and mark laugh, I have a mouse on string which I can catch quite high in the air and rattle balls that I chase around the room. Best of all i snuggle up with ma and pa on the sofa or bed.  Wishing you all in Corfu a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Send my love to all.  Savvy xxx"

Our Google Homepage
It is now several months since we launched our google homepage in May 2008 and it is set to raise about £1,500 for us at the end of our first year!!!! This is an amazing amount and will help us to continue with the feeding and neutering thanks to all of you that are using it and supporting us. If anyone does not know about our page click on our how you can help us page where we explain how it works. To set the page you just add the link www.google.agni-animal-welfare-fund.com  into your browser and set it as your homepage. Many people use google as their homepage anyway so using ours will make no difference to you but it will make a big difference to us and bring us in £24 per year from everyone of you using it. Many thanks to all of you that are continuing to use our page, we appreciate it very much.

Corfu Donkey Rescue
The Donkey Rescue is continuing to complete its purchase of their new land and progress is being made be it very slowly. The move will not come until sometime during 2009 now, but keep up to date with all the news and progress by visiting the CDR website www.corfu-donkeys.com  Rules and Regulations still continue to make things difficult but with the support everyone has shown for the Rescue, progress is slowly being made.

Prints by Emma Fifield
Emma still has paintings available in the AAWF shop, please visit the shop to view the paintings, all sales make money for the charity.

Please continue to support us so that we can help many more stray animals in Corfu.

News Update – November 2008
Its a long time since August when we arrived back in Corfu and what a hot summer it was, then after a few weeks of rain and quite cool weather we went back to a lovely October and now even as late as November it is still very warm and some days even hot!!!

The tourist season has finished and the last of the apartments and restaurants have all closed up and Corfu is now back to its quiet winter status. Unfortunately though with this situation the cats and kittens are all appearing desperately looking for their next meal, a very sad time of year but with your help we are beginning to overcome the problem in many areas.

Kalami
We have been very busy the last couple of weeks gathering up the cats that you have all cared for and fed over the summer months especially in the A&A apartments and the Kalami Villas. Many of you have sent money to neuter some of these cats and we have managed to do all the ones you have requested plus a few more. Those are all in the sponsor gallery here on the website so if you want to check on any of your favourites them take a look at the sponsor page for 2008. There are a few looking for sponsors too, you will find them on the sponsor a cat page, if you can help any of them it would be wonderful as there are many small kittens still around that cannot be neutered until the New Year.

Most of the cats in the Kalami Woods have now been neutered including the young ones, there is a feeder there, so they all have food for the winter, and hopefully should make it through to next summer without producing any more kittens.

There will always be some cats around and the apartment and restaurant owners want that but we all want healthy ones and that comes with neutering. We have had a lot of support from people working at the A&A as well as the visitors, next season should show a great improvement there, we will continue to monitor the situation and Kalami should have the healthiest cats around.

We have some updated photos of some of the cats that became quite famous in Kalami this year with your appeals for help and have appeared on the Agni Forums so here are a few of them that we thought you may remember.

Our famous Tria - born with only three legs.

You would think she had an extra one instead of one less!!!! She is very strong and a healthy little girl and can bound around as well as any cat. She likes to roll around on her back as you can see (right). She was taken by Gina to live at her house and is much loved by her and her Mum.

Remember these two?

The two little kittens found crying in the bushes behind the beach. Left is Kasper - a very handsome young man and on the right is Katrina his sister. They are both very grown up now and living in Kalami. Thanks go to Clare for helping them grow into lovely cats without their Mum and to all of you for your help and bringing them to our attention.

Ena, Duo and Tesera (of course you all know that's Greek for One,Two and Four)

So where is number Three then????

Well of course number three is 'Tria' they are the two brothers and sister of Tria the three legged little girl. They too are all still at the A&A with Mum (pictured above looking for a sponsor) and waiting for you all to come back and see them next year!!!!

We are in the process of setting up the feeding stations, one of which remains at the Strategos apartments on the beach, one along side the apartments next to the Sunshine Travel Office and the one remains in the Kalami woods.

If you can help us keep those feeders topped up this winter then I am sure the little guys in Kalami will appreciate it and so would we. We do not ask for large donations but any little to help feed the cats through the wintertime.

We have had a collecting box in the A&A this year and we would like to thank all of you that have already donated and contributed to the feeding and neutering of the cats there - THANK YOU VERY MUCH EVERYONE

Sidari Girl
I bet a few of you saw this little girl sitting in the bandstand garden outside of the Church in the middle of Sidari ??

She was so full of flu when we found her, but I do believe that people had been feeding her. We took her home with us and kept her on some medication for a week which improved her cold and flu, her fur was also much better when we returned her to her garden. I think it helped her eye too which I believe is being treated at present by Jess, who is feeding her daily and caring for her. She is now called 'Ginny' by Andy Lee who has since sponsored her and she has now been neutered. We all hope that she will be there next year waiting for you all to call and see her in her Garden.

If anyone wants to continue to help Ginny through the winter she is being fed by Jess and any contributions towards her food and for other Sidari cats would be a great help.

Help for the Cats in the Resorts

Thanks to everyone that are feeding the stray cats around the deserted resorts, the biggest problems are in the holiday resorts where the cats are fed by holiday makers and live around the apartments. As soon as the apartments close the cats and kittens appear from everywhere desperately hungry and looking for food, bewildered and wondering where everyone has gone. It is a very sad sight. If the local people living in these resorts can put some food in a sheltered common area for them, it will help and relieve some of the suffering.

Collecting Boxes
Of course we are very grateful to everyone else who have had collecting boxes for us during the summer season and many thanks to those of you that have donated and helped to fill them up.

Our thanks go to Debbie at Sweet Beauty in Kassiopi, Jess at the Lagoon Hotel and Jeni at her Cafe in Sidari,  Sarah at Greak Shakes in Dassia, the Panorama in Agios Markos, Debbie at The Orchard in Peroulades, The A&A Apartments in Kalami and Agni Taverna - thanks to all of you for your support.

Our Google Homepage
One of the ways in which you can help us to feed the cats is to set your pc up with our google homepage. I know that many of you are now using it regularly and it is making money for us to feed the cats. If anyone does not know about our page them just put the link www.google.agni-animal-welfare-fund.com  into your browser and set it as your homepage. Many people use google as their homepage anyway so using ours will make no difference to you but it will make a difference to us and bring us in £24 per year from everyone of you using it. Many thanks to all of you that are continuing to use it, we appreciate it very much.

Corfu Donkey Rescue
The Donkey Rescue is continuing to complete its purchase of their new land and progress is being made but very slowly. The move will not come until the new year now and not before the Spring time. Rules and Regulations still continue to make things difficult but with the support everyone gave progress is slowly being made.

The wintertime is a very difficult time for Judy and the donkeys with the wet weather and very few volunteers, so if anyone is able to help out, just a few hours a week would ease the problem then don't hesitate to contact either Judy or someone here at AAWF.

The AAWF Shop
With Xmas getting close once again we will have some Xmas cards for sale in the shop as soon as possible and hopefully some more paintings along with the other small items.

Prints by Emma Fifield
Emma still has paintings available in the AAWF shop which make lovely Xmas gifts.

Please continue to support us so that we can help many more stray animals in Corfu.
The AAWF is now affiliated to WSPA The World Society for the Protection of Animals.

News Update – September 2008
Its back to Corfu to assess what is to be done this autumn. It has certainly been a long hot summer here and is only just starting to cool down with the first rains since June. We arrived in August to temperatures around 35-38 during the daytime cooling to about 29 at night, not very comfortable to anyone without air conditioning!!!!

Kittens!!
Its Kittens Kittens Kittens, this visit as we have had many reports of kittens in various areas needing help and we are doing our best to help them all.  Our donations and sponsorships have been are very low this year and we have not had the support we have had in the past which means we will be limited to the amount of neutering we can get done. We shall neuter all the sponsored cats and those that we have had money sent in for, of course, and we thank those of you that have already sent money for neutering.

Many of you will have read about the kittens found in the bushes by the beach and the unfortunate three legged one born in the A&A apartments. All of those kittens have been sponsored and will be neutered and placed areas where they can get food and be monitored by us. The two found in the bushes are still being cared for by Clare at present and Gina, the receptionist at the A&A, has taken the three legged kitten and has given it a permanent home,  we will neuter the kitten for her when it is old enough in a few weeks time. Mum and the other kittens are still at the A&A and will be neutered and cared for too.  A big thank you to Gina from us all for taking the 3 legged one.

Jaffa

Another lonely little one eyed kitten was found in our local village  - someone had painted his ears with white emulsion paint - how cruel can some of these people be and I cannot understand the reason for this?? He is featured above as it would be nice if someone could take him in and give him a home. He has a sponsor and will be neutered next week.

Ebony

This tiny little scrap of a girl was found in the grass by a lady walking her dog. It was the dog that found her and he was very gentle not to harm her as he attracted his owners attention. She has been passed to us to try and help her she had bad sticky eyes, and is sneezing, she is covered in fleas and her back leg is dislocated. It cannot be put back as it has been left too long. She is a sickly little thing but with the anti biotics she has had is showing a little improvement so we think she will cope with life and her leg should get stronger as she grows. She will be able to use it but will always have a limp.  Would anyone like to sponsor her for neutering and her medication and if anyone could take her in and give her a home I know she will reward you with lots of love.

Kalami
Thank you to all of you that have donated food for the winter feeding especially in the Kalami area at the A&A apartments. There is still people visiting and still time to collect more if any of you are coming out and would like to help the cats this winter. Kalami is our target area this autumn as there are many cats and kittens in the village there and we hope to make a really big impact there this year, so please keep the donations coming.

Kassiopi
We would also like to  thank the people that have visited Kassiopi and donated at Debbies shop Sweet Beauty. We have had a really successful season there so far which has enabled Debbie to save the lives of four very tiny kittens that lost the mother. The special milk that we need to feed them on is very expensive but thanks to your generosity you have enabled Debbie and Dominique to purchase the amount of milk needed and the kittens are doing very well. This is very unusual as very tiny kittens rarely survive if they lose the Mother in the first few weeks of their lives. Not only have you saved the lives of these tiny little kittens and helped a few others needing medications there is also enough money to neuter many cats in the Kassiopi area.

Grace, is a very large female thorough bred German Shepherd, dumped on a quiet road by some villas above Kendroma village. She had a very bad ear infection and was in enormous pain. The AAWF have had her treated and her ear infection is now cured, some very kind people who live in the villa are feeding her but she is basically living as a street dog. She is very very gentle, the most gentle German Shepherd I have seen and the largest female I have seen too. If anyone can offer her a permanent home, then please contact us by telephone 26630 91780 or email info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com

Our Google Homepage
In our last newsletter we informed you all about our google homepage. We were very surprised and pleased as to how many of you have taken up our request and made our own special google page your homepage, giving us an income of £2 per month from every page. We are expecting to earn over £1,000 in a year from the page which is going to help us in a big way.  If anyone does not know about the page, Agni Animal Welfare Fund has a google page of its own with the normal google search facilities and for every PC that has our page set as its home page we receive £2 per month from the company running the sponsorship, Creative Media Network Ltd. So if anyone out there does not know about our page the link is www.google.agni-animal-welfare-fund.com on the page there is a button to set it as your home page. That is all you have to do and we receive £2 per month as long as you keep the page set as your homepage.

Corfu Donkey Rescue
I know that many of you who support us here at the AAWF are also supporters of the CDR and we also do what we can to support Judy and the Donkeys. I have to say that it was amazing how you all came forward and supported Judy and the petition to get her recognition and permission to stay at the shelter until new premises could be found and purchased. I can say that a piece of land has been found and is in the process of being purchased as I write. I also believe that the purchase is not far off completion and would not be happening at all without the support everyone gave to Judy and the Donkeys. Judy did try to thank everyone personally but it was a large task due to the amount of support but we too would just like to say thanks to everyone and what an impact it has had!!!

News Update – June 2008
Hello everyone, time is certainly flying by and we are now halfway into 2008. We have been very busy the first half of this year and the AAWF has neutered many more Corfu cats. It is an endless battle though and although there are now areas where we can see a remarkable difference we still have many more people and areas asking for our help.

We have found and treated many sick cats this Spring and we have been learning more about the problems that these animals suffer with having to live outside in the wild. We are finding that if the cats are kept in at night they stand a far better chance of survival, unfortunately that is not possible for the majority of cats on Corfu but anyone who does have a Corfu cat/cats try and shut them in somewhere for the night.

Little Socs Story
Amongst the sick cats we have helped this Spring visit was a poor little girl that was hit by a car earlier in the year and suffered a broken leg. She was taken to the vets, had her leg bandaged and we were told to allow the leg to heal on its own as it was not possible to do any more other than a very expensive operation. Her leg began to heal slowly but because of her injury the vet would not neuter her and said we had to wait another month.

Well of course the inevitable happened and she became pregnant. When we could see she was heavily pregnant we took her to the vet for confirmation and was told that the kittens should be due but there seemed to be a problem, the kittens were not moving. We were told to giver her four more days, on the fourth day the little cat started to try and deliver her kittens, but after several hours no kittens had arrived and she began to look very stressed. We rushed her to the vet that evening where she had an emergency operation. Two or three hours more and we would have been too late, but fortunately the vet managed to save her. Unfortunately her kittens were dead and with her broken leg and a complication with the leg joint (caused by the car accident) it made it difficult for her to deliver the kittens herself. The little cat is now fully recovered and living a normal life, she was of course neutered during her operation. Her leg has healed well, she has a limp but is managing fine and is in no pain. Fortunately we were able to help this little girl because of your donations.

Tea Bag
latest update from his home in the UK - by Judie
Well he arrived safe and sound courtesy of Dave McJackson and his white van and instantly got on with his housemate Milly an English Setter, although I think she had reservations for the first week or so as he did seem rather like a juvenile delinquent, but lovely with it of course.

After a few days he found his feet and began to find his escape routes out of what was thought to be a secure garden - luckily a phone number had promptly been put on his collar so he was back home fairly quickly.

He seemed to pace quite alot which we originally put down to him being in a strange place until he settled down but it didn't stop. It was pointed out by a friend that was also a dog trainer that perhaps he was affected by the additives in the biscuits he was having - wow a week later he was a different dog and much calmer, yes he still bounces alot but has stopped pacing unless the fox is in the garden teasing him through the window.  This also meant that he didn't make as many escape attempts, mind you new  fencing also put paid to that.

He's taken out for walks across the fields behind us with milly twice a day and loves it - we've even found a way to tire him out just throw tenis balls, he doesn't bring them back and likes to chew them to bits but we always have two with us to distract him, Teabag is very happy in his new home and it didn't take long for Milly to take to him as she shares her bed with him every night now.

At present I am back in the UK taking a short break from neutering but still working for the AAWF at this end. We are trying to find ways to raise more funds to keep the neutering and feeding going at the end of the season. Any suggestions or offers of help are very welcome. We urgently need more sponsors, fundraisers and support for the many cats awaiting our help.

The holiday season is now underway in Corfu and several friends out there are looking forward to your visits. Please visit the locations listed below that are helping the Corfu animals you will be made very welcome.

News Update – April 2008
This is a very short update from the March 2008 newsletter, mainly to inform visitors to Corfu where they can donate to the AAWF and leave items such as Cat/Dog worming tablets (or Spot on) or Flea treatments. I am returning to Corfu in a couple of days time but whilst I have been away the work has continued by Graham, Marion, Cheryl and other colleagues. They have managed to get a few more cats neutered from various areas on the Island. We have had some sad occasions recently too, where we have lost some of our little friends through sicknesses and tragic circumstances but we have to continue to help those that still need us and not be put off by our set backs.

The new season is approaching fast now and we have several collecting boxes located in bars around some of the main holiday resorts on Corfu where you can donate and leave things for the animals. The places are listed below, we hope that you will visit and support them, the way they are supporting us.

Greak Shakes, Dassia
- has a collecting box, you can also leave any other items there (eg. food, wormers, flea treatments etc.)
Agni Taverna - collecting box or leave goods.

A&A Apartments, Kalami

- have a collecting box and will accept items
Sweet Beauty, Kassiopi
- AAWF collecting box, Debbie has items for sale in aid of the animals including the
CTG Wristbands, food and items for cats and dogs can also be left there.
Jeni's Cafe, Sidari

The Orchard, Peroulades
- Debbie at the Ordchard in Peroulades just outside Sidari has a collecting box for the AAWF and goods for the animals can be left there.

Kalami
Our work now continues in Kalami where we are still filling the feeders regularly and still need donations for food. Hopefully many of the visitors this year will leave donations of cash or food for the cats next winter. There will be a collecting box in the A&A reception area where you can leave cash or make donations of food.

Kassiopi
Debbie in Kassiopi is still helping to get cats neutered in the area and will also be collecting food and donations this summer for food for the next winter and further neutering. So if Kassiopi is your destination this year you can support us by visiting Debbie at her shop Sweet Beauty.

The AAWF Shop
We are working on new items to sell in the shop and also some little goods that can be bought in Corfu. There will be items on sale in Kassiopi and in Sidari.

News Update – March 2008

Having been back in Corfu for a few weeks we have concentrated on neutering as many females as possible due to the Springtime coming and all the cats starting to breed. It has been a race against time and we have neutered at least eight females plus some males in the village of Agios Markos. We have saved the village from many new kittens this year and some of the villagers are very happy to know there will be less kittens this year and can concentrate on feeding and keeping the existing cats healthier.

We have neutered several cats both male and female in Sidari and with Marions help we are still helping the village of Doukades by neutering and relocating some of the cats from there.

So we have had quite a successful few weeks. We have helped several cats needing medication and neutered one street dog preventing further litters of puppies being born on the streets.

The AAWF has seen Teabag, who many of you know from the message forums, restored to a happy healthy dog and delivered to a home in the UK this month, thanks to the donations from all of you out there and the care and devotion of Dee who has cared for him for over a year now. Thanks to everyone concerned, we are all happy to know he is in his new home now.

Kalami
Our work now continues in Kalami where we are still filling the feeders regularly and still need donations for food. Hopefully many of the visitors this year will leave donations of cash or food for the cats next winter. There will be collecting boxes in Kalami this year where you can leave cash or make donations of food.

We will give details in the next news letter of where you can find our collecting boxes and goods for sale.

Prints by Emma Fifield
Emma's prints have been very popular with Corfu visitors and she is working on some more pictures at present. We are also arranging for more of the pictures to be printed and will be featuring more pictures on the website soon.

Thanks again for all the support, we will continue to post updates on where your kind donations are being used and on the work we are doing.

News Update – February  2008
Hello all - we are back in Corfu which was very warm and sunny when we arrived but has now turned very cold again so Spring is not quite here yet. We have much work to do with more cats to neuter before the Spring arrives. Colleagues on the Island have had some of the cats neutered during the last few weeks so the work continues in our absence.

Our priority this Spring is to neuter all the Kalami cats that we can catch and twelve cats that are being cared for by a very kind gentleman in Agios Markos.

The Agios Markos Cats
Featured above are some of the Agios Markos cats, they are quite young cats and are all well fed and cared for, they are flea treated and wormed but because there are so many it is not possible for the gentleman, living here on a pension, to  have them all neutered. With your help the AAWF would like to neuter all his cats for him and vastly reduce the numbers in the village this summer. All cats from Agios Markos are fed and cared for so and when neutered they will have an even healthier lifestyle. If anyone can help by sponsoring one of these cats it would be much appreciated and priority is being given to them.

Kalami Cats
Kalami is also a priority for us where this winter we have set up two feeding stations with the help of some Greek friends and the strays have had food available all through the winter. It is now time to neuter all the cats before the Spring and the summer season begins. We have received some donations for the Kalami cats and those cats will take priority but we will be featuring a few more as we catch them and find how many we have as often they disappear into the villages where it is warmer and to find food, but we think this year not so many have gone off. There is extensive building work taking place in Kalami this winter which means there has been more people in the village and with food available more cats will have remained.

Kassiopi
D
ebbie in Kassiopi has been feeding and helping many Kassiopi cats during this wintertime, do call and see her when you visit this summer, she has a lovely shop selling some lovely body products and gifts. The shop is located on the right hand side of the top road where you enter Kassiopi just after the car parking area where the chemist shop used to be and opposite the old laundry. You can't miss it!

You can make donations for the animals at the shop and leave foods for both cats and dogs and this year our wristbands will be available from there too.

We have managed to do some neutering in the Sidari area thanks to Jess, Marion and Cheryl and if anyone in that area can assist us hopefully we can do more work there later in the year.

Thank you for your donations and for the help we have received up to now.  Please continue to help, in any way that you can, so that we can reach more animals in the future.

The AAWF Shop
We still have a few items for sale in our shop, there are a few wristbands and bags remaining and some Fridge Magnets, and at present we are looking into adding some new items.

Prints by Emma Fifield
Towards the end of last year we offered a painting for sale through our shop by Emma Fifield (a print of the Agni Jetty). T
he prints proved to be very popular and sold well, including the original. We are adding more prints by Emma and there will be limited quantities of these prints so place your orders early to secure your painting. We are offering a picture of Corfu Town this time so please take a look in the shop.

Thanks again for all the support, we will continue to post updates on where your kind donations are being used and on the work we are doing.

Please continue to support us so that we can help many more stray animals in Corfu.

News Update – Late November 2007
Well the water situation is sorted out!!!! It has been a very wet and cool end of season this year and has continued into November. However the rain was much needed and today the sun is shining. It is not as cold as I am told it is in the UK at present, so it looks as though we are in the right place!!

It has been a difficult few weeks here, with many kittens around, many we find on their own with no mothers, brothers or sisters trying to survive alone. We have managed to home a few kittens but nothing like the amount we find. Everyone tells us there is a lot of kittens around this year, more than usual, although in the areas we have neutered that is not the case. So hopefully we are getting there slowly slowly as the Greeks would say.

We would like to thank Debbie at the 'Orchard' in Peroulades for taking in some kittens found by Rita in a very remote area. The 'Orchard' will be open again next summer and its well worth a visit with lovely children's facilities and a pretty place to eat, donations can be made for there also for the animals.

We have done a lot of work in the Kassiopi area where we have received a great deal of help. The cats are being fed there thanks to the visitors that have supported Debbie and her daughters at the shop ‘Sweet Beauty’ this summer and left food and donations for the animals. The shop is remaining open throughout the winter for those of you living in Corfu it is a nice shop for Xmas gifts.

Thanks to everyone who has supported these people in Kassiopi and we hope you will continue to do so next summer when you visit. All the donations taken at Debbie’s shop goes to the cats in Kassiopi, so you are supporting the animals you see and help when staying there.

We still have neutering to do in Kalami but many of the cats there are kittens and too young at present, it has also been difficult to locate some of them. We now have them all accounted for and know where to start the work when we return. In the meantime we have set up two feeding stations for the Kalami cats as there are few people around to feed them whilst we are away. This was done with the help of Angeliki from the travel shop and her Greek friend who is filling up the containers whilst we are away.  We are very grateful for their help and it is so good to have Greek people keen to help us. Please help us to fill the feeders by raising money for us this Xmas.

We are arranging for some more neutering in Sidari with the help of Jess and Marion. We get calls for help from many locations but unfortunately it is not possible for the very few of us working here to get around to everyone but hopefully, eventually if the support and the funding continues to come we will get to other areas in the future.

Thank you to everyone that has donated to us during the last few months and to those of you that have raised money for us. Please continue to help, in any way that you can, so that we can reach more animals in the future.

The AAWF Shop
We have our own Xmas cards for sale in the shop this year and some beautiful prints of the Agni Jetty. The fridge magnets we have make lovely little Xmas presents and we still have the wristbands, bags and maps etc. So do visit our shop and support us there.

Thanks again for all the support, we will continue to post updates on where your kind donations are being used and on the work we are doing.

Please continue to support us so that we can help many more stray animals in Corfu.

News Update – October 2007
We have now arrived safely back to a much cooler Corfu. The weather is very pleasant, sunny and warm but the excessive heat has gone, much to everyone’s relief. However the much needed rain has not arrived yet but hopefully it will soon as the water situation here is very serious in many areas.

We have contacted our colleagues and met up with other charities since our return and there is much work to be done.  The work in Doukades will continue and in the Sidari area where we have some more neutering to do. We also now have contacts in these area for winter feeding. As our newsletter last month reported Kalami and Kassiopi are two particularly bad areas with many strays and new kittens so we would like to offer some help in those areas this winter if we have the funds to do so.

Thank you to everyone that has donated to us during the last few months and to those of you that have raised money for us. Please continue to help, in any way that you can, so that we can reach all these areas in need.

Many of our advertised cats and dogs have found sponsors for which we are very grateful and we will continue to post some more pictures of more little guys that need sponsoring very shortly. So do keep an eye on the website.

It is getting very close to the end of the season here now and I hope everyone has enjoyed their visit to Corfu this year. I know many of you have supported the Corfu Donkey Rescue this summer and have left wormers and flea treatments etc.for the cats and dogs. Thanks to everyone who has brought goods out for us and thanks from Judy for the support you have given to the donkeys. For those of you that have not yet had your holiday on Corfu there is still another month to go, so have a good time.

The Great Scottish Run
On September 2nd 2007, one of the CTG members, Yvonne (Yvonne and Bob – login name) took part in the above event and raised a considerable amount of money for the AAWF. Yvonne had a successful run and we wish to thank her for supporting us. Maybe some of you who live up there in Scotland managed see the race or went to support Yvonne on the day.

In March of this year Mary Darby did a Half Marathon run and raised money for the AAWF on Corfu, anyone interested in running on Corfu please contact Mary as she would like to meet other people who run and maybe not have to run alone. Mary can be contacted on her mobile no. 6970193491.

The AAWF Shop
We will be adding our Xmas cards to the shop very soon, so please look out for them, there is a lovely selection all featuring animals and very appropriate to our cause. We still have wristbands left, although stocks are very low now so if you don’t have one yet there is still time but do hurry as there are only a few left. Some of our shop items would make lovely Xmas gifts especially our lovely little fridge magnets – so do take a look.

Thanks again for all the support, we will continue to post updates on where your kind donations are being used and on the work we are doing.

News Update - September 2007
It’s been four months since we left Corfu and returned to the UK for the summer, and what contrasting summers the two countries have had. I don’t know whether it’s better to be too hot or too wet, but whichever, both countries have suffered badly with many people losing their homes. Let’s hope things settle in both countries and we can enjoy some more moderate weather with less major disasters.

I have been in touch with many colleagues out in Corfu who have continued to help the animals and I am told we have received many requests for help with neutering in several areas of Corfu. We have just started to help some of the cats in Sidari and are continuing with the work we started earlier this year in Doukades.  Kalami is another area with many strays and Kassiopi too is particularly bad, so we would like to offer some help in those areas too if we have the funds to do so.

Thank you to everyone that has donated to us during the time we have been in the UK and raised money for us. We have with your continued support raised enough money to get a start in some of these areas as soon as we return.

All our advertised cats and dogs have found sponsors for which we are very grateful and we will be posting more pictures of more little guys that need sponsors as soon as we can get the photographs.

I hope you have all enjoyed your visits to Corfu this year and had a really good time; I don’t suppose any of you had holidays spoilt by rain this year!!! But many of you will still be waiting for your turn to go with still two months of the season remaining.

The latest news on 'Teabag' is that he has continued to improve and has had his treatment for Leashmania, and is now in the process of being prepared for his passport and travel to the UK where he has a permanent home to go to. Dee still posts updates from time to time on his progress on the Agni message boards. He is a very lucky dog and thanks to Dee and her husband for the care and the dedication they have given him over the past nine months he should be able to live a normal healthy happy life in his new home. Thank you to everyone who donated to Teabag in order to help him get the medical care he so badly needed. What a lovely happy ending to a very sad and pitiful story that began early in January this year. I wish they all ended that way but unfortunately that is not the way life is.

The Great Scottish Run
This event takes place on Sunday September 2nd 2007 and we have an Agni member Yvonne (Yvonne and Bob – login name) taking part in the run and raising funs for the AAWF. Do please support Yvonne (see the message strings on the Agni message boards for details) and if you live up in Scotland why not go along and cheer her on and give her some support. We will give more information about the event in the next news letter.

We still have a few wristbands left, although stocks are very low now so if you don’t have one yet there is still time but do hurry as there is only a few left. With Xmas approaching some of our shop items may be more appealing, so do take a look. The lovely little magnets will make lovely gifts especially for the children to buy and this year we will have our own Xmas cards, so please keep a check on what we have for sale.

That’s all for now folks, until I arrive in Corfu, then we will let you all know what is going on over there and how we are using the money you have all so generously donated to the many strays.

News Update - April 2007
After four more months on Corfu we have neutered around 40 cats. It is almost time for us to return to the UK for a while. It is difficult to neuter in the tourist areas during the summer months so if we continue to receive support during the holiday season we shall return to a mass neutering session at the end of the season. Please continue to bring us flea treatments and worming treatments, we do use these when we have the cats for neutering. Any holiday makers that have cats around their accommodation can always treat the cats for fleas themselves if they think the cat needs it. It would be a great help to the cats. Be careful with worming tablets but if you see evidence and think a cat requires worming then please go ahead, it would be helping us and the cats.

In addition to neutering we have given medication to many cats that have been found to be unwell.  We have helped some, but others if they were too bad have been put out of misery. We have worked in a particularly bad area this winter where many of the cats have been sick and we hope our treatment has helped them to a healthier life and they can enjoy the summer months. Hopefully this area will have less kittens next winter and it will generally be a better place for all the cats.

The latest news on 'Teabag' is that he is still being cared for and is about to start some treatment for Leashmania, he has a home to go to in the UK but has to wait until his medical condition is better, he will then begin his injections for his passport. We have to thank Dee for the dedication she has given this dog and for all of you that have donated to him and helped him to his new life.

For anyone who has not read the story about 'Teabag' and is interested, take a look at the Message Forums on the Agni website and search for ‘Teabag’ you can read all about him on there.

Greek Village Cats
We have just received a plea for help from a local greek village to help the cats. The village is overrun with feral cats and the situation completely out of hand. We are making this our next project and help has already begun. Some of the female cats have been neutered first and the village has already been saved from about another 20 kittens being born already.

We are going to need a lot of support for this village project – please help in whatever way you can, you donations, however small are making a difference to the animals of Corfu. Drontal worming tablets and flea treatments are also required for these cats.

Marathon Run
At the end of March, a half Marathon run was held in Corfu as a trial for the future. You can read more about it in the April edition of the ‘Corfiot’ English newspaper. Mary Darby ran the half marathon, completed the course, and raised over 300 Euros for the AAWF through sponsorship. We would like to thank Mary for her support and all those who sponsored her. If anyone on the Island is interested in long distance running Mary would be pleased to hear from you. Please contact her on mobile no. 6970193491.

The AAWF Shop
We now have a shop page on our website, where all our goods for sale are offered.

The Agni bags are for sale in our shop and we still have our very popular Agni Wristbands in there. The Corfu Map can be found there too along with another very interesting book on Corfu’s naval history.

News Update - February 2007
It must be about three weeks since we returned to Corfu and we have already neutered 12 more cats with your support. The lack of rain and mild winter is bringing the mating season on early and already the cats are beginning to breed. Many have been give medical treatment to help with the cat flu that so many suffer from here and with flea treatment and worming, I hope we have helped 12 more to a better and healthier life.

Our colleague Dee continues to care for 'Teabag' who has brought so much concern from his ever mounting fans on the Agni message boards. He is making progress but had been found to have Leashmania which is very common on this Island, but up to now he cannot be treated for it until he is stronger. I have visited 'Teabag', who is now quite enjoying all the attention he is getting and seems to be much better and brighter in himself, which is a good sign. We feel that he will survive but has a long way to go yet and we still have to see how he responds to his treatment for Leashmania when it begins. Thanks to Dee for the devotion she has given this dog.

For anyone who has not read the story about 'Teabag' and is interested, see the paragraph below which we reported in the last news update:

Many thanks to  Dee who is caring for a very sick and malnourished dog that she found in her village, readers of the Agni message forums have been reading about 'Teabag' during the last few weeks. Dee is keeping everyone informed of his progress on the CTG message boards and for the first few weeks he made very good progress but has since been found to have Leashmania. The AAWF is funding his veterinary care which would not have been possible without the support we have had throughout our first year. However, we do need further funding for the dog, so donations towards his medication and care would be greatly appreciated. You can donate here through our donate button above, but if you would like more information about 'Teabag', do read the messages boards.)
