News Update –
September 2011
It is now September and the season is drawing to a
close. It is a little quieter than July and August
around the resorts but still many visitors are here.
We are back in Corfu for the autumn when the cats
need the most help and it is easier to find them. If
funds allow, we neuter quite a lot at this time of
year. We hope all our supporters that have been able
to visit Corfu this year have had a really good
holiday. The weather has been quite unbelievable
with a very hot late August and it is now late
September and the temperature is still reaching over
30 deg's. It feels as hot here now as it did in July
early August when we made a short visit.
Kalami
We have had considerable support from the visitors
to Corfu mainly the Kalami visitors and have been
able to make Kalami a much better place to holiday
with far less cats than have been around in previous
years and those that are there are healthy, are fed
and cared for. Many thanks to all of you that have
visited Kalami this year and supported the cats. We
will continue to help them throughout the winter
time with your help.
Early in August we were called out to a Villa in Kalami by the visitors staying there, to help a
little kitten. He could not walk properly, had a
badly swollen leg and a very high temperature. His
leg was not broken as first thought but it turned
out that he had a very bad hernia. He had to have an
operation for the hernia and has recovered well from
it albeit he still has a limp which will be
permanent unfortunately. There was also damage to
the ligaments in the leg which causes his limp but
he is not in any pain from it. One of AAWF
supporters on the island has taken him in and he has
joined a colony of cats where he is fed and cared
for. He is one of our cats looking for a sponsor so
if anyone can help by sponsoring him he needs
neutering now and his operation has cost us a lot
already so a sponsor for him would really help.
He now has a name and is called Ernie!

Arillas Cats
We have sterilised a few more cats in Arillas
this year. Several people have asked for help and we
are trying to raise money in Arillas
to help more of the street cats there with food,
medication and neutering. AAWF has an active
volunteer in the area and with your help and
donations we can do more work in this area. This is an
appeal to any Arillas visitors that are interested
in helping the street cats there. It you are an Arillas fan please get
in touch with us.
AAWF Facebook Page
Do visit our Facebook page that is run by Clare, who helps many of the Kalami cats
both summer and winter. She will pass on any
messages to us and post events and news from AAWF
and the Kalami, Agni area. Many people have their own page on Facebook
so do join us and catch up with updates on what is
happening in Corfu. Here is the link to our Facebook

Homes Always Needed
We always require people to volunteer to help us by
taking in a stray cat or kitten from time to time as
so many special cases arise and desperately need
regular food and someone to keep an eye on them. If anyone
living in Corfu can take on a kitten as an outdoor
cat and ensure that they get food and have shelter
and some protection from the bad weather in the
wintertime we will sterilise any cat that is taken
on and pay for any medication.
Please email
info@agni-animal-welfare-fund.com if you can
help.
Regards, from all of us working for the AAWF.
Please continue to support us so that we can help
many more stray animals in Corfu.

New Update -
June 2011
We returned to Corfu in March of this year and have
managed to sterilise quite a few more cats before
the breeding season began and saved many unwanted
kittens. We were visited by a Greek lady from one of
our local villages and asked to help with her cats.
This is good progress and leads us to believe that
what we are doing is making a difference and people
in Greece are recognising the need to sterilise
instead of poisening!!!
Arillas Cats
We have also been able to sterilise quite a
number of cats early this year in the Arillas area,
again for Greek Taverna owners and some for a local
pool bar owner. If any Arillas fans would like to
donate towards the cats there
it would be so much appreciated as we would like to
further reduce the numbers of cats in this area.
What we have done is a great start, so any donations
would be welcome.
Kalami
The cats in Kalami did very well this winter
with the help of some dedicated friends and
volunteers who made sure that food was available for
them during the closed season. Much of the food was
donated by AAWF thanks to the help and support you
have given us. We have now been able to sterilise
most of the cats in the Kalami area, making Kalami a
much nicer place to visit with no starving cats
bothering the visitors. The cats there are clean,
and fed and should not bother the restaurants and
customers at the tables, although there will always
be the odd cheeky one who would like something
special from the Menu!!
Apollo who was found at the end of last season in
Kalami with terrible burns on his body has recovered
very well. He has scars from the burns which are now
quite exposed and is at risk of getting sunburnt as
he has shed his winter coat. However he arrived in
the UK last Thursday and is very happy and going to
his new family next week. The cooler, less sunny climate, will suit his skin
condition much better than the hot sun of Corfu. Many thanks to Diane, who is taking Apollo in and
giving him a home. He is going to live in Wales
where he will have many companions and will be
living in a very animal friendly home, we know he
will be much loved there too, so good luck Apollo in
your new life.

A small all white cat which was found in Kalami
along with Apollo at the end of last season, also
arrived in the UK with him and has gone to a new
home. He was adopted by Lisa and James who were
staying at the A&A during the last week of the
season. They adopted the little white cat, who is
now a very large white cat, and had him
brought over to the UK. He would also have suffered
from the sun as he is completely white with very
pink ears. So good luck to Arthur and thanks to Lisa
and James for giving him a home.
A big thank you to John who lives in St.Spiridon for
the auction of a mini Hi Fi. The item was brought
over from the UK and not suitable for the purpose it
was bought for and so given to John. He really
didn't need the Hi- Fi so he auctioned it for the
AAWF and raised some money for us. Many thanks for
thinking of us John and if anyone can raise any
money for us, however small it would be appreciated
and all go to help the Corfu cats.

News Update –
March 2011
With all the Christmas festivities long gone, and
thoughts of Spring now on the way, it is time to go
back to Corfu for the Springtime season. Always a
lovely time to be in Corfu, with the beautiful
spring flowers covering the Island, not too hot but
some nice warm weather - hopefully!!
We would firstly like to thank our friends and
colleagues who have spent the winter on the Island
and have helped us to feed the strays during the
winter months, thanks to your donations. We
know there are many others out there who are feeding
the strays throughout the winter months, who we do
not know, and do not have our help, a thank you to
all of those people too, keep up the good work.
A special thank you goes to Roseanne this winter who
has had a very difficult time with a little cat she
found in Kassiopi at the end of the season, thanks
to her dedication, patience and sleepless nights!
she has succeeded in improving the life of a little
girl who we know would never have made it through
the winter on her own. The little girl Maggie,
needed many vet visits, a great deal of medication,
good food, warmth but most of all, the thing that
many Corfu cats don't get - 'love'. She still
needs some care and we don't think she will ever be
100% fit and well, she had many problems and still
has some scarring around the eyes that does not seem
to clear, but she has so greatly improved, thanks to
Roseanne and she now has a much better quality of
life.

Maggie - twice the size!! |

and a happy little girl

Kalami Cruelty Case
We reported another cruelty case at the end of the
season in our last update, the cat we found in
Kalami with severe wounds on his neck, back and side
which we believe were burns. Apollo, as he is now
called, has made a remarkable recovery and is
looking in much better health. His fur has grown
back in most of the burnt areas and he is remarkably
well. He is the most adorable cat with a lovely
nature, he never deserved what happened to him, but
then no animal does. However he has a sponsor and a
home to go to in the UK where he will be going in
the very near future.

Apollo, looking very fit and
well |
Sandy, found in Sidari area
You may remember Sandy the little cat found by
Cheryl at the end of last summer in the Sidari area.
He was featured in our last update. Unfortunately he
was not so lucky as Apollo and Maggie, he was found
a little too late and did not make it. However
Cheryl tried her best for him and worked hard to
save him, he died peacefully, not suffering, thanks
to the efforts of Cheryl from CARE.
AAWF Facebook Page
Thanks to Clare, who helps many of the Kalami cats
both summer and winter we now have a Facebook
page. I know many people have their own page on
Facebook and you are all invited to join us and
catch up with updates on what is happening in Corfu.
Clare keeps the page updated and posts photos
regularly for us, do contact her via Facebook for
any information about what is happening with the
animals in Corfu. We have sent out a mail with the
link to our page but for anyone who did not receive
it and has not visited our page here is the link.

Arillas Cats
We have been contacted by a Greek Taverna owner in
Arillas, and a pool bar on the front, who would like
help to sterilise their cats. We do like to involve
the local Greek people and encourage sterilisation,
so it is always a pleasure for us to be able to help
them but we can only do this with your support.
We are hoping to have some fund raising events this
summer, in Arillas, so we are calling on all Arillas
fans and visitors for your support. We
have a contact in the area who can assist us with
neutering, aftercare and feeding etc. so with your
help and the support of the local Greek people we
should be able to help many Arillas cats.
Are you visiting Arillas this year?
If so you may want to sponsor a cat in your
favourite resort. If so please contact us.
